All food imports to Vietnam after March 11 from Fukushima, Gunma, Ibaraki and Tochigi must have radiation safety certificates. The regulation requires that any food imports without the necessary certification be held at the port of entry until they are properly checked for radioactivity.
Only about 20% of Japanese food products imported from areas outside these four prefectures currently undergo such testing.
If the radioactivity is higher than permitted levels, the entire shipment must be returned, and Japanese authorities notified.
The Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Science and Technology have set up testing processes at Noi Bai and Tan Son Nhat airports, as well as the main seaports in Haiphong and Ho Chi Minh City.
The initiative came after the natural disasters, and resulting nuclear accident in Fukushima.
Vietnam has found no radiation in Japanese food imports so far, said Phung Huu Hao, Deputy Chief of the Ministry of Agricultural and Rural Development’s Department of Agriculture
